| Unlike most Great Blue Herons
across the northern portion of North America the west coast race does
not migrate south during the winter. Darker in colour, these birds
nest in tall trees in rookeries of up to several dozen nests. Unfortunately
many nesting sites are being encroached by human development and high
levels of dioxins have shown up in many individuals. The coastal Great
Blue Heron has been slowly declining in numbers over the last decade. |
