| Mark once observed a gray whale
cow and calf take shelter in the shallow waters of a kelp bed to escape
and attack by five transient killer whales. The grays escaped eventually
but the image of these huge creatures plowing through a tangle of
kelp left a lasting impression that became his first underwater painting. |
